Routes to Licensure Offered Through the Curry School
You may be one of the many students and professionals interested in attaining licensure or endorsement to work in public schools. If so, you are in the right place! We offer both full- and part-time degree and non-degree programs that lead to licensure and endorsement. Some programs are offered on Grounds and others are offered at off-Grounds Centers. To find the program that is right for you, visit our Licensure/Endorsement page.
How to Apply for Licensure after Completing a Licensure/Endorsement Program
We have put together a collection of Licensure FAQs, but first, we recommend you read the following information:
If you are already licensed and are attempting to add an endorsement in Administration and Supervision, Reading, or Gifted Education:
- Go the licensure website for the Virginia Department of Education and click on “Application for a Virginia License.”
- Complete Part 1 of the College Verification Form and fax (434-924-0888) or mail the document to the attention of Paula Price, Curry School of Education, Office of Admissions and Student Services, P.O. Box 400261, 405 Emmet St. South, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4261. We will return the form via U.S. Mail to your home address, so you can add the required materials (e.g., official transcript, a check payable to “Treasurer of Virginia”).
- If a prerequisite for the endorsement is completion of a degree, check ISIS to be sure the words “degree conferred” appear on your transcript before ordering an official transcript. Your transcript can be ordered online through the Registrar’s website.
If you do not have initial licensure and you are completing the BA/MT, BS/MT, BSEd/MT or PGMT
- You must apply for licensure and endorsement when you apply for graduation.
If you are completing a master’s degree in Counselor Education or Communication Disorders
- Please submit your application for licensure after graduation. Licensure information is available on the website for the Virginia Department of Education.
If you are completing an off-Grounds initial licensure program in Elementary Education or Special Education
You must submit your Record of Progress to your advisor before applying for licensure. Once your program of studies has been approved, your advisor will provide you with licensure documents and forward your packet to Curry’s Office of Admissions and Student Services.
