The Leonore Annenberg Teaching Fellowship at the Curry School of Education

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, with support from the Leonore Annenberg Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation has established a signature Fellowship to recruit and prepare great teachers for the students and school that need them the most.
The Leonore Annenberg Teaching Fellowship provides a $30,000 stipend for master’s-level teacher preparation at the University. Fellows then teach for three years with ongoing mentoring in schools that serve a significant number of high needs students.
Designed as a Rhodes Scholarship for teaching, the Annenberg Fellowship seeks to raise teaching’s prestige and create a new gold standard for teacher preparation by choosing candidates of the highest caliber, character, and potential. It’s goals include preparing outstanding teacher candidates and placing these candidates in high needs schools and developing a core of teacher leaders.
Eligibility Requirements
• Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree by June 1, 2010.
• Applicants must be interested in teaching math, science, or Spanish in middle or high schools
• Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
In exchange, Fellows agree to teach for three years in high need secondary schools. Fellows will receive intensive mentoring and support during their first three years of teaching. They also become life-long members of a national network of Woodrow Wilson Fellows who are among America’s most distinguished thinkers, artists, scientists, and educational leaders.

Application Information
1. Complete the ONLINE INTENT FORM.
2. Complete the Curry School of Education Application. You will be applying as an on-grounds Post Graduate Master of Teaching degree.
3. Submit official GRE and Praxis I (or equivalent) scores. GRE scores are required for graduate study at the University of Virginia and Praxis I is required for Virginia licensure. You may be eligible to substitute SAT or ACT scores for Praxis I. See the Curry application directions for more details.
4. In the personal essay section of the Curry Application Form, respond to the questions below. Answers to each question should be no more than 500 words.
- If you are accepted into the program, you will prepare to teach children in a school with very limited resources in a high poverty area with low student achievement (a high-need school). Explain what attributes you would bring to that kind of environment.
- Imagine a situation in which you are required to explain a complex concept in your specialty field to middle or high school students. Describe the approach and explanations you would use and why you feel it would be effective.
5. Check list of items for submission. Applications are due on January 5th, 2010. A review of the applications will begin on January 20, 2010.

Program Principles and Components
The University of Virginia Leonore Annenberg Teaching Fellowship is designed to attract talented college graduates and accomplished professionals into challenging teaching environments. The focus of the program will be on preparing teachers to work with underachieving students in schools that lack adequate resources.

Prerequisites and Terms of the Fellowship
• Baccalaureate degree as of June 1, 2010 with a major in science, mathematics or Spanish.
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident status.
• Agreement to teach math, science, or Spanish for three years in high-need secondary schools.
