The Adapted Physical Education Graduate Program is offered through the Kinesiology Program in the Department of Human Services in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia

The University of Virginia has been preparing adapted physical education specialists to meet the needs of the Commonwealth of Virginia and surrounding states since 1978. During this period over 90% of program graduates have

been employed as physical education/adapted physical education specialists in a variety of public and private school settings. Much of the funding for this training has come from grants from the United States Department of Education.

The purpose of our adapted physical education program is to prepare future adapted and general physical educators to meet the physical, motor, personal, social, and learning needs of children with disabilities. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of consultant to general physical education as well as direct service to children with more severe disabilities. Graduates of our program are eligible to become nationally Certified Adapted Physical Educators (CAPE). Graduate programs in adapted physical education are available for full-time programs at the Master's (MEd) and Doctoral (PhD) levels. The Master's program also involves a unique Practicum Experience . For more information about Adapted Physical Education please click on the pdf CEC Article on Adapted Physical Education .
